A Welcome Reception at the University of Westminster for Turkish postgraduate students.

On Monday 22nd October 2012 the third annual Welcome Reception 2012/2013 for postgraduate students, organised by the London Centre for Social Studies (LCSS) took place at the University of Westminster. Distinguished guests, academics and international postgraduate students from diverse universities and disciplines came together to offer their ideas, advice and moral support on how to succeed within the British academic system.

After the registration period had ended the one-by-one the distinguished guests took to the stage to offer their advice to the attending postgraduate students. The distinguished guests included Professor Geoffrey Petts, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Westminster; Mr Baris Elmener from the Turkish Consulate in Britain; Professor Alp Ozerdem from Coventry University and Dr. Canan Kocabasoglu-Hillmer from CASS Business School, City University. During the speeches, Professor Petts, was presented with a gift by Mr Ermener as a thank you gesture on behalf of LCSS to the University for being such great hosts for three years in a row. Information with regards to the role and activities which the LCSS embarks on was highlighted within Dr. Fahri Karakas’ speech, who is one of the volunteers at LCSS.

Prof. Petts welcomed the audience and advised the postgraduate students that “this is a particularly stimulating time, particularly challenging time but it will also be a time where you have the opportunity to learn and grow and to understand how you too can make a difference”.

Mr Elmener thanked the LCSS for giving him the opportunity to “utter a few words of encouragement” and stated that the “United Kingdom attracts the brightest and best like you”.

Both Prof Ozerdem and Dr. Kocabasoglu acknowledged the psychological challenges which international postgraduate students may face. Prof Ozerdem interstingly stated that “People are anxious when they are facing the unknown and at the beginning of postgraduate degrees there are lots of unknowns.” Dr. Kocabasoglu-Hillmer had emphasised the important of having a social life as a postgraduate student and that you should “reach out to the people who feel can help you in this difficult time.” Dr Kocabasoglu-Hillmer also stressed the important role which the Turkish students played “in keeping Turkey’s name relevant in research and, including social scientists, and in business.”

Two PhD students, Roberto Orsi and Ferya Tas, offered the audience the benefit of their experiences, with Roberto highlighting the importance of networking, publishing and teaching as a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA). Ferya also advised the audience to also meet people of their own country as well.

The evening was ended by a networking and refreshments session where academics and students got the opportunity to meet each other in an informal atmosphere.
