Are you a postgraduate research student who teaches or aims to pursue an academic career that involves teaching in higher education institutions?

LCSS invites postgraduate research students in the UK to take part in a training weekend on teaching in higher education to be held in 22-23 June 2013.

The LCSS Training for Teaching in Higher Education will:

-          Help you develop your teaching and lecturing skills through practice sessions and feedback;

-          Improve your teaching by helping you to identify your strengths and areas in need of improvement when delivering teaching in classes, seminars and lectures;

-          Provide you with guidance on preparation for teaching in higher education institutions.

At the end of the training you will have an enhanced understanding of the principles of effective teaching, student learning and assessment, and you will know how to put these principles into practice.

The Training for Teaching in Higher Education is a two-day programme with the following sessions:

Session 1: Teaching and Learning in Different Academic and Disciplinary Cultures

This part of the training provides information about different approaches to teaching and student learning in different academic and disciplinary cultures in higher education. Participants will understand the impact of various course designs and teaching delivery styles through comparisons between different academic and disciplinary cultures.

Session 2: Student Learning and Small-Group Teaching

In this session, participants will gain insights into different approaches to small-group teaching and student learning in higher education. They will develop their understanding of the selection, design and implementation of appropriate teaching approaches in the context of small-group teaching. Participants will practice leading a seminar discussion and will receive individual feedback.

Session 3: Assessment and Feedback

This last section of the training introduces participants the principles and practices of assessment, and helps them consider strategies for supporting student learning through feedback.

Session 4: Lecturing

Training on lecturing will develop participants’ understanding of the selection, design and implementation of appropriate teaching delivery in the context of lecturing. Participants will practice giving a mini-lecture and will receive individual feedback.

This programme will be led and instructed by Neil McLean, Head of Educational Development at the London School of Economics.
