Alev Adil

Lecturer, University of Greenwich

Alev Adil lectures at the University of Greenwich where she is head of the department of Creative, Critical and Communication Studies. She is a writer, reviewer and translator whose poetry, fiction and academic writing engages with the mythic, post-colonial identities and the interstices of private and political memory. She is widely published. Recent academic publications include Writing the (post-oriental) Self for Interaction : international journal of British and American Culture, 2006; Viewing Technology: paranoia in cinema for the International Journal of Knowledge, Technology and Society, 2006; Technology on screen: Ghost/Machine in Cyber-Cultures, Oxford: Inter-Disciplinary Press 2005; Art into Ashes in The Issues in Contemporary Culture, Spring, 2005. Her poetry has appeared in magazines including Agenda, Mantis and Body Politic; in Turkish and Greek media including Hurriyet and Parikiaki and in anthologies in America, Britain, Cyprus, Turkey and Lithuania. She has performed her poetry at a number of venues in London including the Hampstead theatre, the Shaw theatre, the Jazz Café, the British Museum and the Commonwealth Institute. She has appeared at poetry festivals in the UK, Cyprus and the Cuirt Literary Festival in Galway, Ireland. Her poetry has featured in the Guardian and is included in the Routledge Encyclopaedia of Post-Colonial Literatures and has also been broadcast on Radio 4 and Channel 4 in the UK. She is part of Poetz for Peace, a bi-communal UN funded Cypriot writers’ and musicians’ collective, and is featured on their 2004 CD Cyprus Thing Her first collection of poetry Venus Infers was published in 2004. Alev also reviews for The Times Literary Supplement, The Independent and The Financial Times.
