DR. PATRICIA K. KUBOW is Professor in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies and Curriculum & Instruction at Indiana University (IU). She is also Director of the Center for International Education, Development and Research (CIEDR) in the IU School of Education (http://ciedr.indiana.edu). Her research interests focus on the comparative study of constructions of democracy and citizenship education especially in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. Kubow has been recognized by The President of the U.S./The White House and the U.S. Agency for International Development for her work in international democratic education. Her scholarship has received distinguished research awards from the American Educational Research Association and the Association of Teacher Educators. Kubow’s co-authored textbook, Comparative Education: Exploring Issues in International Context, is used in schools of education in more than 15 countries and has been translated into Korean.
Kubow teaches graduate courses in comparative and international development education, comparative higher education, international perspectives on democratic citizenship education, and qualitative research, as well as an undergraduate course on teaching in a pluralistic society. In addition to keynote addresses in Greece and South Africa, Kubow has also presented at professional conferences in Australia, Canada, Cuba, Hong Kong, and Thailand and has conducted educational research in many countries. Her publications appear in journals such as Comparative Education Review, Educational Policy, Higher Education in Europe, Journal of Comparative Education, Middle Eastern & African Journal of Educational Research, Phi Delta Kappan, and World Studies in Education. Kubow is the recipient of numerous federal grants that have enabled cross-cultural studies with Kenyan, South African, Jordanian, and Ukrainian educators. She has also obtained several Fulbright grants that have enabled research and educational exchange in Jordan, South Africa, and with international teachers to the U.S. Kubow has been a Visiting Research Professor at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa and conducts educational field research in an historically disadvantaged township outside Cape Town. Her research also includes the study of educational reform and citizenship education in Jordan. The voices and views of women and children in relation to education for democracy are prominent in her scholarship.
