Raising Expectations Project Successfully Completed

LCSS’s recent community project ‘Raising Expectations: Promoting the Visibility of Role Models within the Turkish-speaking Community in Britain’, sponsored by the Big Lottery Fund, has been completed successfully. Guided by our team, dozens of higher education students and recent graduates were involved throughout all stages of planning and execution of this project. Distinguished Turkish-speaking individuals took part in this project including; Alp Mehmet, the Former British Diplomat / Vice Chairman (Migration Watch UK); Can Yeginsu, Barrister; Dervish Konuralp, Paralympic Swimmer; Elif Shafak, Write / Novelist; Baroness Meral Hussein Ece, Liberal Democrat Peer (House of Lords) and many more from different professions including academia, sports, law, arts and teaching. These individuals, we believed were, and remain to be, high achievers, who will encourage and inspire the Turkish speaking younger generation. We interviewed many high achieving Turkish – speaking individuals and they all had a different story to tell. Inevitably the project aimed to build a sense of connection between senior members of the community and the young population. Over 300 students were directly reached through the networking events as part of the project including Northumberland Park Community School, Alevi Cultural Centre and Cemevi, West London Turkish School, Dr Fazil Kucuk Turkish School, Eltham Turkish School and Wisdom School. 5000 copies of our booklet ‘Raising Expectations: Promoting the Visibility of Role Models within the Turkish Speaking Community in Britain’; was distributed to schools, libraries, community organisations and local governments across the UK, particularly, to those areas with a large Turkish speaking population.

As LCSS we would like to say thank you to all our role models who kindly participated in this project. We believe that it is these stories which will encourage and inspire Turkish – speaking youths. And we would also like to say thank you to all those in the project team. With their contribution this project fulfilled its purpose, and we could proudly say this project has been the initial means to pursue success in the future.
